New Orleans Hurricane Disaster Relief - Youth Missions 2012

Posted by Johnny Saunders on

What an amazing week of hands on ministry. Our group took the challenge of rebuilding and refurbishing an elderly grandmother’s house who was struggling to raise her three grandchildren on her own. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 was jaw dropping as we toured the New Orleans area; the 9th Quarter looked like a war zone of destroyed houses & businesses. It brought to life the pictures our students had seen on the television.

This trip put us face to face with the reality that city of New Orleans was nearly destroyed. Where do people go and what do they do? We heard so many heart breaking stories that galvanized our group onto action. We had our hands full in the project God gave us. We worked long days and were blessed to spend a lot of time with this precious family. On our 2nd day on site one of the grandchildren, an 11 year old boy accepted Christ as his Savior. Students not only completed an amazing week of working on the house, they went above and beyond by using activity funds to instead take these children on their first trip to Chuck E Cheese. What a wonderful time to see the excitement in their faces (and our students too). It was a fantastic week where we saw God use our group to bless others!

Our plane ride home was an added adventure as we flew through a tropical storm; thank God for His hand of safety. Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this trip possible.
