Pine Ridge Reservation, Pine Ridge, South Dakota Youth Missions 2011

Posted by Johnny Saunders on

What an eye opening trip. The poorest county in the United States is on this Indian Reservation. Students were exposed to how rough life can be right here in our own country. Alcohol, drugs, and suicide run rampant in Pine Ridge. We partnered with Team Effort and stayed at Porcupine School.

On our day of arrival at camp we were greeted by a group of young kids who threw rocks at our group and shouted obscenities. I wasn't sure what to expect from that point on, but our students responded in a way that I know had to please Christ. The week was full of local outreach and projects, we reproofed a house in Porcupine, replaced rotting outside walls for an elderly Grandma in the community and did some driveway repairs where the winter weather had made a mess of the road.

At each project we were able to interact with these families and share why we were there and talk about Jesus. We had a great day of outreach at an area called Evergreen with area youth, playing games and storytelling and getting to interact with so many. We brought in lunch and fed around 35 kids and shared Jesus with them as well. Each night we had powerful worship services that encouraged our students to serve the Lord. I saw our group grow together tackling the challenges that the week held.

Thank you to each that made our trip possible, we pray for your continued support as we grow the next generation of Christian leaders.
